Abstract:ObjectiveTo improve the quality of sputum specimen collection through a bundle of interventions.MethodsSputum specimens of patients who were hospitalized between February and October 2011 were collected through routine method. Intervention in respiratory department was carried out from May 2011(intervention group, followup and feed back, continuing education, as well as health education were carried out), the other inpatient departments was as control group, the efficacy of intervention was evaluated through investigation on sputum collection, delivery and quality. Results After intervention, the qualified rate of sputum specimens of the intervention group was 41.94%, which was significantly higher than 21.62% of control group (χ2=18.76, P<0.05) and 24.19% of intervention group before intervention (χ2=10.85, P<0.05). ConclusionThe qualified rate of routinely collected sputum specimens is low, the quality of sputum specimens can be improved by a bundle of interventions.
